Welcome to the Scandinavian School in Maputo
Safe & supportive
In the Scandinavian School in Maputo every child is seen and heard. Children are welcomed into a calm and supportive environment where they are encouraged to grow through knowledge, play and community. Every child is an individual and our school and preschool always aim to give children the space and conditions needed to explore, evolve and express themselves.
Playful learning
Through play and creative activities, children develop curiosity, independence, and problem-solving skills. Learning is joyful, meaningful, and always centered around the child.
Quality education
All teaching follows the Swedish national curriculum. Our licensed and experienced educators ensure that each child develops according to their individual needs and potential.
Familiar and home cooked –
our approach to learning
While other things get bigger and bigger, we believe in keeping it small. With groups and classes the right size, everyone gets their space to thrive. This makes it easier for teachers to see every child and adapt to individual needs, while making sure parents’ voices are heard when it comes to day-to-day activities.
Our community is where we shine. We teach our students to explore ideas, look out for one another and find their own voices – but often discover they learn even more from each other.
Great facilities help us organise the activities that benefit our students the most, promoting physical health as well as critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Sharing nutritious and home cooked meals together helps us refuel and strengthen the bonds between students and staff alike.
With all the time our children spend here, we want them to consider the school their home away from home – a safe space where they are comfortable to be themselves and can form a robust base for the exciting journeys ahead.
Our pledge: a second family
In operation for over 40 years in the heart of Polana district, the Scandinavian School in Maputo is a non-profit school open to everyone. The school currently offers preschool in either English or Swedish for ages 1–6 and Primary and Secondary education in Swedish from 6 years of age.
The school is characterised by a small scale Scandinavian approach to learning with a strong sense of community, where inclusion and equality serve as fundamental building blocks. With smaller classes and groups, our dedicated teachers work on an individual level to help every child not only realise their academic potential but build self-esteem and identity. Children are encouraged to bridge age gaps and support each other – like they would inside their family.
Promoting health through
physical activity
With a subtropical climate, the outdoors is never far away. Children come to love the school yard, where trees and canopies offer shade during hot days. We believe that physical activity is a key ingredient in promoting health and well-being and that the stimuli our young ones get from playful interaction together is hard to beat.
Our full-size ball court offers plenty of space for games and sports like football, tennis and volleyball. Both school and preschool children enjoy swim classes as well as play-time in our generous pool. During evenings and weekends, parents and children alike are welcome to use our facilities for playtime, sports and relaxation.
‘When we moved to Mozambique from Europe two years ago, our daughter’s gluten intolerance was one of our biggest concerns. Seeing how the school has handled the situation with an individualised diet has been such a relief. We have been so impressed with how the kitchen staff have managed our daughter’s food restrictions, making sure she gets home cooked and nutritious lunches, suited to her needs, every day of the week.’

‘Our three children had the privilege of growing up at the Scandinavian School in Maputo – a place that has left a lasting and very special mark on our family. Our two youngest were just babies when they started, and we instantly knew this school was something special. For us, it always felt a bit magical. The children spent their days climbing trees, playing in the sand, swimming in the pool, learning, exploring, and being in nature. They learned Swedish in a Mozambican environment, surrounded by bilingual teachers who moved naturally between Swedish, Portuguese, and English. Another beautiful aspect of the school is the inter-age learning, nurturing such empathy and community. The Scandinavian School truly became our second home. We miss it dearly and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants their child to experience a nurturing, joyful, and empathetic start in life.’
