Frequently asked questions

In this space we have gathered some of the most common queries we get from people not currently involved with the school. Don’t find the answer you’re looking out? Please reach out to us. You can find our contact details at the bottom of the page.

Where is the Scandinavian School?
We are very centrally located in Maputo, Mozambique, on Avenida Armando Tivane, one block from Avenida Julius Nyerere and just between Feima, Mundo’s and the Swedish embassy.

Who owns the school?
No one. It’s run by a parental association on a non-profit basis.

Do you use school uniforms?
No. Children wear what they feel comfortable in.

What languages are spoken by the staff?
Teachers in the Swedish speaking section speak Swedish and English. Teachers in the international section speak mostly English (Portuguese if needed).

Do children have to bring their own lunches?
No. Preschool children bring a light morning snack. Lunch and afternoon snacks are provided by our in-house cooking staff. School children are allowed to bring a morning snack, but typically don’t require it.

When is the school closed for holidays?
The exact academic year is decided on and communicated to parents on a yearly basis. But typically, the school closes for two months between mid-June and mid-August and has a three week break over Christmas and New Year. The school also does week long breaks in February, April and October, respectively.

What are your pick up and drop off times?
Kids can be dropped off in the morning from 07:15. At the end of the scheduled school day, school kids go to our after school activity, Fria. Both Fria and the preschool are open until 17:00, which is the deadline for picking kids up Monday–Thursday. On Fridays, everyone finishes early and parents are required to pick children up at 12:30.

What are your fees?
The fees are updated every year by decision of the parental collective to reflect inflation and general costs. You can read about the current fees here. To get a quote for your children, please contact the principal.

My child has a learning disability and is in need of extra resources. Is the Scandinavian school still an option?
The school is open to everyone. Depending on the extent of support needed, the school may employ an extra resource to support your child, which normally incurs an extra fee on a cost covering basis. The fee is decided on a case by case basis. For more information, please contact the principal.

I am not a parent at the school. Can I still use your sports facilities or host a weekend event at the school?
You can buy an activity card to access our pool area and play tennis and more in our ball court. For a one-off fee, it’s possible to rent our outdoor spaces to host an event or party outside of school hours. Special conditions apply, please contact the principal.

Do you organise Swedish classes outside of school hours?
We can, for a fee. Get in touch and we will be happy to try and tailor a package to your circumstances. Furthermore, children not at the school can pay to join our after school activities to interact with other children in Swedish.

How do I apply for the school and/or preschool?
Fill out our application form or contact the principal directly.
