Our preschool welcomes little explorers aged 1–6 years, offering a safe, joyful space to learn, play and grow. Parents choose between English and Swedish speaking sections.
Where play promotes growth
Structure and responsibility – with a soft touch
At our preschool, we meet every child with curiosity, care and joy. Learning is woven into play and everyday routines, from morning greetings to creative projects, outdoor adventures and cozy story moments.
We believe in children’s ability to grow in their own time and in the power of community. Our days are built on kindness, respect and the simple joys of being together. Whether your child is exploring new ideas or resting quietly with a book, they are always seen, heard and celebrated.
But everything is not about soft values. With structure and kind support, we teach our children age-appropriate responibility, whether it’s about cleaning up after playtime, waiting for friends to finish their meals before leaving the lunch table or managing personal hygiene.
Language and science are also focal points in our preschool. Letters and writing are introduced in playful projects while inquisitive little brains are tickled by exploring the plant and animal kingdoms.
With the right foundation, our preschool children are ready once it’s time to put on their big school shoes.
Two languages – same approach
At The Scandinavian School in Maputo, we welcome children aged 1–6 years into a joyful, caring environment. With many international families combining different nationalities and backgrounds, language is a key focus.
The preschool is divided into an International section and a Swedish section that practise the same methodology, but have different language profiles. Besides English and Swedish, our educators speak Portuguese, should your child require it. Parents are invited to choose the environment best suited for their child.
Following the Swedish curriculum, the preschool nurtures curiosity, creativity and confidence. We strive for every child to feel seen, heard and acknowledged. Fewer children per teacher makes this possible.
A vow to our little ones
With a staff dedicated to giving our youngest students their best possible start, we feel fortunate. Our educators don’t believe in just managing our children, but stimulating them to realise their potential through hands-on interaction, throughout the day. We don’t put kids in strict age groups, as children tend to thrive then interacting with friends outside of their own age group.
We know starting or changing preschools can be stressful and do our very best to limit the friction by using tailor made introductions, where parents are welcomed to join their child in preschool for as long as it takes to adapt. After integrating into preschool life, parents still have a lot to say and can expect regular progress reports. Special requests? Please let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate them.
Our educators have a clear ambition in mind. The preschool wants to foster secure and inquisitive individuals, who are not only ready for what lies ahead, but curious and excited to take the step into the school world, when the time comes. Put your trust in us, and we will do all in our power to prepare you for the next adventure. That’s our vow to you.

‘Our son Chai joined the Scandinavian School in Maputo when he was just one year old, and it quickly became a place where he truly flourished. At such a tender age, being outdoors, free to explore, move, and play, was so important for his development. Surrounded by nature, gentle guidance, and other children, Chai learned how to socialise, feel confident, and belong. The warmth, care, and sense of community made the school feel like a second home for our family. We will always be grateful for the beautiful start it gave our son.’

‘Our family of five spent nearly five years in Maputo on an international contract. There’s a six-year age gap between our kids, and they all went to The Scandinavian School. Through the years, we had so many great experiences and met so many wonderful people through the school. There’s such a warm and inclusive atmosphere and the kids really loved both the regular days and the out of the ordinary events, like going to camp. After starting out in a new country and a new international school, the children also miss the classroom environment, where smaller groups make it easy to connect with teachers for support when needed. With so many great memories, we can’t recommend the school enough!’
